"for centuries zen masters have said that daruma is zen. perhaps it would now be appropriate to say that daruma is japan. in neither case is the definition fully explicable or applicable. each is essentially a koan whose solution is acessible only to experience, not to rational analysis. this is to assert finally that daruma is one key to an authentic and rewarding experience of japan and the japanese people."
(h. neill mcfarland: daruma-the founder of zen in japanese art and popular culture)

there are many renderings of daruma figures (you can see some of them on the cover of this compilation), but what they want to express on the inside is always the same. it is the spirit of the founder of the zen sect - daruma daishi (about 5th cent.). daishi was the eighth generation great master after shakyamuni buddha. legend says that daruma was born the third prince in a south indian kingdom. as a child, he was already of a sharp mind and he followed the great master prajnaatara. daruma studied buddhism intensly and carried on prajnaataras tradition. he then left for china to preach buddhism. the zen teachings of daruma daishi entered japan during the kamakura period and he is revered as the first patriarch of the zen sect. during the middle of the edo period the famous zen priest and painter hakuin (1685 - 1768) painted many simple impressive pictures. these pictures were used to teach the townspeople who could not read.

the origin of papier-mâché dolls (hariko) comes from china. during the tang period (616 - 906), chinese culture reached a pinacle. during that time there was the custom of using a wooden doll with a pointed base, which was like a spinning top. when the doll fell, it pointed to a person who then had to drink the next cup of ricewine or do a short performance. (remember, the cups were really quite tiny.) time passed and we reach the meiji period of japan (1868 - 1912). the chinese drinking companion had changed to a japanese papier-mâché doll and was now called "old man who never falls down". this old man seemed to get healthier with the years and was the symbol of long life. japanese travellers to china brought the chinese dolls back as souvenirs, since they were light and easy to carry. the dolls were amusing as they fell down and tumbled up again - soon they turned into a toys for little children and hence the tumbler doll was born. it seemed to fit the parent's wish for children to grow up healthy and was a hit on the market. over time the doll went through many changes; the old man turned into daruma, as we know it today.

after the period of warring states, japan achieved 300 years of peace under the tokugawa regime. the tumbler dolls of papier-mâché, first made in kyoto, soon reached the new capital of edo. the inventive townspeople of edo painted a big black beard on the face of the old man and a visiting priest came to say: "well, if this is not the face of daruma daishi himself!" the red robe was the traditional garb of a priest. getting up after falling down was seen as the wish of an ill person to get better. it was also said that the stark red colour would ward off smallpox, so the red tumbler doll of daruma would be the best present for a sick child. this one blessing was soon followed by others and developed into "falling down seven times, getting up eight times" (nanakorobi yaoki); turning into a blessing for many generations of the family line, good business and others. thus daruma got a firm place in the heart of the japanese people and seemed to work for the good of people with its six heads and six arms. the faith in him grew steadily and soon the dolls were sold at many local temples during new years festivals. during this time the tradition to paint one eye for a wish started. you had to buy a new one every year and so the tradition expanded. we have to thank the founder of the zen sect for all of this.

the expressions of human feelings that you can find in daruma's faces can be found in ant-zen's tenth anniversary compilation. from anger to relaxation, from happiness to sadness - all the variety of ant-zen can be found in here. but the most important thing is the main expression - if you fall down, you will rise up again - this is what this label did for ten years. so you are invited to celebrate with us. enjoy the essence of ten years of work and hopefully escort ant-zen for the next ten years.

orphx . pre-dawn haze
over the years, this canadian duo has gained quite a reputation and have garnered much respect from their listeners. much of this is due to their ability of combining ambience and rhythmical pulses which in turn create a perfect mixage. the project started in a more 'industrial' manner, as can be seen on their first cd release on malignant records. since then sampling explorations and subliminal rhythm treatments have become more and more important to orphx - f.e. on the brilliant 'the living tissue' release on hands productions. this is daruma's perfect opener!

roger rotor . drown delay
born, raised and residing in switzerland, roger rotor has worked as a musician (under this moniker) since 1997. his first solo record was released in 1999 and before that, he performed in several bands with varying musical styles. some of these projects date back to 1983. rotors earlier releases are more noise influenced, as such it was quite a surprise when he confronted the unprepared audience of maschinenfest 02 with a straightforward rhythmic 4/4 beat attack. people asked for records - well, there will be a full length ant-zen cd release later this year. but first, enjoy 'drown delay' and - dance... !

iszoloscope . au seuil du néant [daruma cut]
in 1999, françois bénard & yann faussurier, both from canada, decided to start a project that focused on their own sound. in early 2000, after creating several different ambient, experimental, industrial/noise and rhythmic compositions, the two named the project iszoloscope. in august 2000, iszoloscope performed for the first time as a live act. in 2001 iszoloscope's first cd was released on spectre records (belgium) and f.bénard left the project. iszoloscope is now a very active member of the industrial/noise community around the world. in this short time several albums, collaborations and contributions to compilations have been released - not to mention the live performances across canada and europe. the concept behind iszoloscope is an artistic portrait of the effects of isolation on judgment, mental health, interpersonal values and anger toward a human being. an accoustic interpretation, in a very personal way, of its consequences on one's mind. that is the inability to express and understand thoughts/feelings that result in irrational thinking and the overwhelming anger that climaxes in unpredictable cycles. this remix for daruma shows faussurier's perfect treatment of heavy rhythmic structures combined with threatening, dark ambience - as will also be heard on the forthcoming cd and vinyl releases on ant-zen.
www.iszoloscope.net

synapscape . turn to green
those who are familiar with ant-zen know that synapscape (aka tim kniep and philipp münch) needs no introduction. their debut was the very first ant-zen cd (released back in 1995) and we are glad that they have stuck by the label. synapscape's unique usage of heavy polyrhythms, ambient soundscapes, slight dub influences, mysterious vocals and astonishing live appearances has made fans all over the world. on this new unreleased track you can enjoy the noisy side of synapscape while waiting for the forthcoming new cd-ep on ant-zen.
www.ant-zen.com/synapscape

asche . frantic queen & iron man
three years ago, asche added a new musical direction to his work by combining hard distorted rhythms to his dark and ambient dronescapes. the result, 'distorted disco', was (and is) more than accepted by listeners and reviewers alike. beyond his live appearances, asche was constantly working on new material, as can be heard on his last release 'distorted dj'. the heavy beat(ing)s of act145 caused lots of enthusiastic reactions from our listeners - this track here is indeed rhythmic but not that offensive.
www.ant-zen.com/asche

axiome . klach-façade
olivier moreau and c-drik fermont's last release as axiome, the 12" 'va-t-il faire beau?' combined sound explorations and rhythmic rage perfectly. people enjoyed the ultra-fast breakbeat attacks and the weird sampling treatments as well. so if you have a record player: this track is yet unreleased ! and if you don't - listen to this, and then go get one !
www.syrphe.com/music/bibliography/axiome.htm

cell auto mata . hipster [aggression mix]
m.maire a.k.a. celluloid mata decided to change this project after 6 years and several releases - this change is manifested in the name change. for cell auto mata: p.münch (synapscape, the rorschach garden...) has joined and this project is intended to last a bit longer than just a 'collaboration'. the pop influence of p.münch perfectly melts together with matas industrial sources. a full length release is planned, so check out the very first track ever released by cell auto mata!
www.zone51.com/mata/new.html

contagious orgasm . hurricane 02
this track might be a surprise for those who are familiar with hiroshi hashimoto's work. it can be described as the most rhythmic piece of music contagious orgasm has ever made. along with the orchestral intro, 'hurricane 02' shows once more the variety of hashimoto's creativity.
plaza26.mbn.or.jp/~sssm

this morn' omina . epoch [ccf]
mika a.k.a. this morn' omina is quite the new member of the ant-zen family of artists. t.m.o joined this family after several releases (first on tape, then on cd and vinyl). the music is the perfect combination of tribal ritual sounds, hard rhythmic industrial beats and techno influences. it is this music which has enlightened more and more listeners as well as the anthill. this unreleased track is another example of t.m.o.'s polyrhythm dance craze. there's more to come: a new full length double cd will be released on ant-zen this summer !
www.hegira.be

p·a·l . i.r.k.
as he is more into cats, p.a.l set his dog on fire on 'ant-hology'. 'i.r.k.' shows that he hasn't lost the connection to powerful rhythmic industrial. listen to this until your radio breaks! unreleased track.
www.ant-zen.com/pal

morgenstern . touched
morgenstern (andrea börner) is quite well known to the listeners that have stuck to ant-zen for a long time. her first release on our label was in 1996. her turn from dark ambient tunes to more power-electronic ingredients made morgenstern a trademark for the rhythm-oriented ant-zen addicts. there will not be new release this year, but you can enjoy this unreleased track which shows, one more time, morgenstern's ability to tear you down to the bone.
www.ant-zen.com/morgenstern

individual . 180 bullets per man [short version]
a piece of solo work from silk saw's marc medea - this can be described as the beat-oriented side of what we know of silk saw - but the question is: what do we actually know... ?
www.silksaw.org

mental destruction . descent into abjection
mental destruction are an exception to the well-known cliche of 'swedish industrial' - replacing the often nihilistic attitude with a positive, but nevertheless very powerful one. this track is m.d. at their best - harsh powerful beats, scourging doom-industrial.
www.mentaldestruction.com

converter . slave
some more american hard candy. this unreleased track proves that scott sturgis a.k.a. converter is still one of the superiors in rhythmic industrial. turn up the volume - this is volunteered slavery !
www.ant-zen.com/converter

monokrom . sbj
the mystic collective strikes again ! a pulsating, droning wall of sound, leaving the unprepared listener in a state of shock and paralysis. if you liked act102 and act122, you will love this unreleased one!
www.ant-zen.com/monokrom

hypnoskull . oh my god, you saved my life!
more drum'n'bass than industrial, this unreleased track shows patrick stevens' combination of danceable fast beats and voices - in this case neither him nor miss mieke m.. maybe you can also say 'oh my god, you saved my life' after hypnoskull's rhythm treatments cured your phlegmatic illness !
www.escape3.org

ars moriendi . früchte des schmerz
compared to the a.m. members' other projects (synapscape, asche, morgenstern, templegarden's, the rorschach garden, m.o.a.t.a. omen...) ars moriendi is the most 'band oriented' project to date. you can even find guitars on this track, (taken from the 'in memoriam' 7") and the distorted strings add almost a 'rock' feeling to the harsh power-rhythms/german vocal screams. their ambient roots are replaced here with some good, rough, dirty e-rock'n'roll (or maybe punk?). enough to keep your party going - and just the right track to end up cd1 because what can be played after this one?
www.ant-zen.com/arsmoriendi

noosa hedz . gone 1931
what originally started as a collaboration in 1999 between celluloid mata and ultra milkmaids, later evolved into a project entitled noosa hedz. 'gone 1931' appears on cd for the first time and is taken from the 'hoola hopz' 10" (act124). a psychedelic ambient journey - this is the finest in electronica.
www.zone51.com/noosahedz/nh-index.html

m2 . the darkness
listen to what the man said:
"an artist should always progress with his sound, the actual style of m2 i've been working on is more 'danceable' better for live-shows than the complete ambient-like productions ive done in the past,"
and furthermore...:
"well, certainly there have been loads of glitch-ambient releases in the past but my live shows with m2 really showed me the necessity of beats. i just didnt want to bore people with the ultra-reduced soundscapes of parsec anymore. also i thought it would be easy to work with rhythm in m2 songs - they are all from 60 to 90 bpm - slow so you can easily bang your head!"
an unreleased track - bang your head now !
www.brainwashed.com/panacea

veruschka . boredom kills
veruschka, hailing from the great continent of australia, is a project by the female singer veruschka and david thrussell (mastermind of snog, black lung, soma). this may be pop - for ants it surely is. 'boredom kills' was taken from the deleted 'the secret' 10" (act112).
www.worldwentdown.com/imcc

l'ombre . revenant
what l'ombre's works are about: atmosphere. hypnotizing ambient soundscapes that make you want to listen and feel. let yourself go, drift away into a haze of images and scenes. 'revenant' is a new unreleased track.
l'ombre

ah cama-sotz . religion. the taste of spanking [the whip beats harder-mix]
we're no angels, and ah cama-sotz for sure isn't one either... come with him to the world of your master slave relationship, to the world of the dominatrix. explore your fetish, discover your lust, prepare your rites of the flesh! this unreleased remix will bring you to the edge of libertinism and self-destructive impulses. confess ! repent ! turn your punishment into a celebration !
www.ahcama-sotz.com

ambre . rance
ambre, a.k.a. olivier moreau, john n. sellekaers and c-drik, will present their fourth album on ant-zen later this year. as a first 'sign of life', they continue their dark, non-rhythmic sound-treatments in this new unreleased track.
www.metarc.com/discography_ambre4.htm

ultra milkmaids . my personal tv system
it's quite funny reading u.m.'s biography - starting as a punk band that turned into experimental rock, then into ambient industrial, and then into... into what? yes, it's some kind of 'mood music', but you have to get into the mood before, not while listening. you recognize the original milkies sound when you hear it as you do on this unreleased track - but you never know what yann is currently watching on his personal tv system...
www.zone51.com/ultra-milkmaids/index.html

rob(u)nent . bathroom symphonette
well, mr. rob(u)rang describes his' music as 'experienced nursery rhymes for an ethnic group to come' - we guess, one this group exists (or visits us) they will be able to review rob(u)'s music perfectly. for this little symphorette he got company from an earthling: olivier moreau a.k.a. imminent - who is still recovering from the culture shock. an unreleased track.
www.hushush.com/silksaw/robu01.htm

black lung . autocratic zeit swift
black lung, david thrussell's second project after snog, appear on this compilation with a plain instrumental track - a hard-driving fast electronica-dance tune. no message - a rarity - and yet unreleased.
www.worldwentdown.com/imcc

telerotor . fusion
in 2002, telepherique visited roger rotor at his studio in zürich switzerland - the result appeared just a few months later as a cd on ant-zen: act130 (modern times). 'fusion' is an unreleased track from this sessions. if you like the 4/4 dance-while-you-work beat of 'karoshi', you will also like this one !
www.ant-zen.com/telepherique

vromb . séquence - voltage
those who own vromb's latest release, 'le tourne-disque', won't be surprised by this unreleased combination of crystal clear rhythm and icy, droning soundscapes. subliminal ambient-noise techno hypnotism - that's still valid for this extraordinary canadian project.
www.vromb.com

imminent . miraw
a long awaited new track from imminent - after olivier moreau hit several audiences with his phenomenal live attacks there were lots of requests (and questions) for new material. sure, this is only one track, but it shows perfectly that o.moreau is still rhythmic - although he has already turned off the lost highway and is heading into new directions! unreleased track.
www.ant-zen.com/imminent

silk saw . unsungsong
silk saw (marc medea and gabriel severin) from belgium combine intelligent noise with a complex clash of bare cackles, abstract beats and smooth drones. this unreleased tune continues silk saw's psychedelic sound treatments - as if the sixties never existed and the true psychedelic era has started right after the idn warps.
www.silksaw.org

templegarden's . khazad-dm
templegarden's was founded in 1993 with the aim of producing very dense and ritual-ambient sounds. actually tg's is an organised loose collective featuring a. schramm, a.börner and p.münch along with several friends. the sound-variety has become enormous, but it still remains in the ritual sector. old myths, nature, magic places and the unexplainable are their main inspirations. for those who loved their latest cd release 'done rooms', this is an unreleased piece that leads you beyond what we call 'daily life'.

klangstabil . gloomy day
klangstabil always explored different directions - from early noisy experiments to the exploration of self-built organs, from nintendo gameboys to old russian myths - expect the unexpected. in 2002, klangstabil performed with salt at the maschinenfest in aachen - a highly appreciated concert that caused many requests for a release of that kind of music. after a track on the maschinenfest compilation cd was released, anthill received more requests. we guess 'gloomy day' is just what you wanted and it will shorten the time while waiting for the full length cd 'kopfmusik' on ant-zen/mhz. a very personal, intimate piece of music - what other track should end this compilation?

reviews:

vital weekly
on the front cover of ant zen recordings' tenth anniversary cd-compilation titled daruma you will find a pretty angry face staring at you. the face belongs to daruma, who was the father of zen buddhism. the facial expressions of daruma vary according to the human feelings. thus the variations in facial expression on the cover sleeve, symbolises the range of atmospheres represented on the double cd-compilation. the spectre of musical expression seems wider on this anniversary collection compared to the fifth year-compilation "ant-hology" where the expression were first of all concentrated towards the harsh side of electronic music. on daruma we are stylishly confronted with everything from noise and power electronics across tribal space-ambient to drum'n'bass and trance-related industrial techno. even an ethereal gothic hymn added female vocals appears thanks to david thrussell (aka snog aka black lung) under his side project veruschka. best moments on the compilation are morgenstern's ambient noisy track of deep rumbling power electronics titled "touched", and the short but intense "180 bullets per man" by individual sounding like an upbeat version of earliest suicide. the compilation proves that the list of interesting upcoming names on ant zen recordings still seems to grow meanwhile the legends keep going strong. in that sense daruma is a very nice way of celebrating the tenth anniversary of a label that definitely has had a great impact on the widening of extreme electronic music. wreck this mess

(carole jay)

barcode
hard to believe that the ant-zen label is a decade old, this is mainly due to the fact that there still remains something fresh and vital about them. ant-zen is one of the few labels that successfully manages to combine art and music, whilst their industrial trademark, so powerfully encapsulated by the many acts on their roster, always has a message behind the music which takes it beyond mere noise. having said that, there will always be those who are uncomfortable with the sort of music the ant-zen factory produce, and it is likely that the appeal of the label will always be directed at a fairly small section of the music world. probably even smaller than those original industrial acts of the mid-to-late eighties, who always used a smattering of melody and imagery to give the scene a sense of novelty, and at least one foot on the commercial ladder. therefore, anyone who has had an introduction to the ant-zen label will know what to expect from this mammoth double-cd tribute. 32 tracks from 32 artists, with highlights coming from those who manage to eclipse the juggernaut, thrashing metallic beats and rhythms in favour of the occasional moment of solitude or structure. contagious orgasm sound particularly interesting, and are probably the way forward for a label which could find itself stuck in a rut if they do not take side turnings at some point or other. this morn' omnia are another exciting act, who innovate through their use of ethnic rhythms and soundscapes, merged within the clanking industrial-electronic tones, epoch is brilliant. elsewhere, its disc two where you will discover the most 'musical' clarity. noosa hedz have a crack at aphex ambient on gone 1931 and squaremeter pure electro on the darkness. l'ombre serve up deliciously organic beats and programming on revenantt, whilst ultra milkmaids have a fair crack at downtempo ambience on the oscillating pitches of my personal tv system. other contributions arrive from well-known label mates such as vromb, imminent and black lung. long live ant-zen, like them or not, you have to recognise that the label is a crucial component to the world of electronic music who have always stuck by their principles and produced challenging and alternative music. oh, and their artwork and packaging is quite simply the best i've seen anywhere.

lefantastique.net

nicely packaged and stuffed of sounds, daruma represents the 150th ant zen's release. i haven't checked but since it contains thirty two tracks played by thirty two different bands on a two cd set which on the fist pressing comes along with two posters, stickers, cards, etc. it seems to me that almost each band who released an album is here greeting the label for its tenth year birthday, but i can't tell for sure. anyway... the fist cd seems to be more concentrated on noise and rhythm bringing us new or remixed tracks by orphx, roger rotor, iszoloscope, synapscape, asche, axiome, cell auto mata, contagious orgasm, this morn' omina, p·a·l, morgenstern, individual, mental destruction, converter, monokrom, hypnoskull, and ars moriendi. the second one has got noosa hedz, m2, veruschka, l'ombre, ah cama-sotz, ambre, ultra milkmaids, rob(u)nent, black lung, telerotor, vromb, imminent, silk saw, templegarden's and klangstabil. if you already know ant zen, you know what is expecting you: tons of rhythmical, noisy and ambient experimentation which made of the label a reference point for the genre. now, since we kinda cleared what this compilation represents, let's try to understand behind the daruma concept which is part of the japanese culture. by visiting www.darumaonline.com first of all we're impressed by the different kind of darumas and by the expression of the faces painted on those objects (i don't know if they are made out of clay or what else) but the concept of daruma could be more interesting. on the website you can read: " everybody knows daruma, if they are japanese . daruma is so popular and connected with japanese tradition and culture. many people in japan buy daruma for elections, success of business, weddings, and other happy events more.... [ daruma brings happiness to everybody ! ] daruma was a person who lived a long time ago. daruma was a prince in india. daruma went to china with the idea of buddhism. daruma started chinese zen. daruma was 28 generations from buddha. there is a very famous story about daruma. daruma sat facing a wall for 8 years meditating and..[became a saint] .... " a daruma is presented as a sort of stone with elliptical shape which never falls. when you received a daruma you've got to: first, please draw the right eye when you see in front of daruma in black, if your eye's color is blue, you should use blue it, doesn't matter. (*^_^*) then, you make a wish, anything's ok, wish to make a boy or girl friend, succeed in your business, win in the big election, win the game, pass the examination, [wishes of human being never stop], usually........ (*^_^*) anyway, when your wish comes true, please draw in the other eye. it will become a complete daruma, in front of you".
