act 162 · this morn' omina · the drake equation - [ecf] · cd-ep

tracklist:
N = (R*) (fp) (ne) (fl) (fj) (fc) (L)

"the drake equation [ecf] is a stand-alone release, it is not part of the nyan trilogy or a precursor to the next part of this trilogy nor is it a series. this release shows how the mind can wander off to other (uncharted) territories while time passes by. therefore when this concept reared its head it had to be completed and explored first.

the parameters of the equation are linked to the track indexes but they should not be considered as song-titles. they are related to the definitions of the equation but are not strict representations of them.

the drake equation is the basis of mankind turning its 'listening ear' towards the universe. similarly, these recordings are the 'listening ear' toward locational distance and the temporal sonic future of this morn' omina. several new elements have been added to the recording process; the most noticeable is the use of live percussion as the basis and the finishing of each track. here sal-ocin (empusae) has been an integral and essential part of the recording and creational process.

the drake equation [ecf] is a first step forward toward a new future of this morn' omina.
the next releases will bear the mark which has been set here but in different and evolved forms.

new listeners and fellow-travellers in the tmo-universe, who have grown exponentially in number during the course of the last two years, are warmly welcomed to this new stage in the journey. enjoy the voyage!"

(mika / this morn' omina)

what can the listener expect? between the intro and the outro tracks, the direction is set: rhythmic powerplay, from slow percussion backings to hard-driving fast drum beats. both tribal and techno influences are - once more - beautifully combined and fused into one dense, entraining sound. 'the drake equation [ecf]' is a great addition to the t.m.o. discography and it will shorten the wait for the next full length album in 2005.

"in the silence of dead monitors, the hardcopy hums into trays, signal after signal from the chaos, the various voices are collected, and after the final signal, one can listen and wait for the encoded call of the void..." (this morn' omina)

this morn' omina are one of the most fascinating electronic acts around, they revel in producing incredibly atmospheric electronica at the cusp of technology. the drake equation is a short album, for them, at around 30 minutes, but acts as a precursor to a new album in 2005. their latest work once again amalgamates everything that the act is best known for; tribal loops, power rhythms and techno-based, distorted sound patches. after a short intro, (fp) - all the track titles are equational - starts in imposing mood, with some hard-hitting powernoise. (ne) then enters the fray, with a long intro featuring jungle drums, backed by steamy synths and distant, echoey sounds. the track slowly builds to incorporate a rich stream of other effects including sampled vocals, as the rhythms are expertly layered up. this morn' omnia are masterful at building such dark, slow, richly atmospheric music, and this is amongst the best i've heard from them. (fl) returns tma to the clubs, with belting beats and techno-style keyboard notations driving the track forward in a cataclysmic wave. two further ethereal shorts arrive, along with the track (fc), which uses samples to produce static computer game electro, although the track eventually evolves into more melodic climbs. the drake equation is not a major shift sideways for tma, and delivers exactly what listeners will be expecting from them, although it's true to say they have evolved their sound over time, moving slightly away from the powernoise trip to a more accessible vibe. the drake equation edges closer towards commercialism, but with a completely unique backbone to what everyone else is doing in electronic music at present. if you haven't checked them out, now is the time.

guts of darkness

due to the re-issue of 7 years of famine and the release of le serpent blanc ~ le serpent rouge on ant-zen this morn' omina has been able to gain a position as an industrial top act. on this new release this morn' omina proves once again they deserve this attention. there is not a single other act in the field of industrial music that sounds like they do. mika goedrijk (this morn' omina's mastermind) truly creates original music. the pounding industrial goa trance or ritual techno (what you prefer to call it) is impressive and addictive. the track '(fp)' is an instant dancefloor smash hit. tribal percussion and harsh beats go along in harmony and the sjamanistic (vocal) sounds in the background create a mysterious atmosphere. another dancefloor track is '(fl)', which builts up slowly but evolves into an irresitable dance track. on the drake equation the more ambient-oriented side of this morn' omina is also present, as shown in the moody '(ne)' and the mystical '(fc)'. i still think the best way to describe this morn' omina is like an industrial version of eat static. this new ep should thus be able to do well in both the industrial as the trance scene. i am sure people in both these "worlds" will enjoy this album and it will do well on the dancefloors. avant de nous livrer la suite de la trilogie nyan, voici this morn omina de retour avec un maxi autonome dans sa discographie, mais non moins sibyllin. il n'est plus question ici de reptile astronomique ou de poème hermétique en vieux français, mais de suivre, au son des rythmiques toujours aussi syncopées et des sonorités electro-hypnotiques dont eux seuls ont le secret, l'errance de l'esprit par-delà les frontières du connu, dans des territoires étranges et brumeux, un ailleurs mystérieux et attirant à la fois. après avoir plongé l'auditeur dans le bain bouillonnant des rythmes tribaux dès le premier titre, this morn omina organise un glissement progressif au cours de compositions moins directes mais donnant peu à peu le vertige, orchestrées autour d'un balancement entre trames oniriques planant lentement sur les percussions, et pulsations plus franches et régulières, incarnations musicales des hésitations de l'esprit en territoire étranger. l'équation du titre (celle que le radioastronome frank drake présenta en 1961 à un colloque de scientifiques discutant de la recherche de présence extraterrestre dans la voie lactée, et qui précéda la création du seti et le développement des recherches en la matière) se veut aussi celle des prémisses du futur de this morn omina. a en juger par ce maxi excellent, les recherches sont en bonne voie ! oh, man, they've dunnit again! with every new tmo release you can hear their very ritual roots combined with the bald energy of mr. tmo himself. it is like the pan-knob on a mixer - you let the sound start on one place, then it leads you all across the room, your feet all over the place in total ritual rhythm, then it leaves you somewhere totally different. the pan button. the drake equation. the back cover of the cd. yes, the latter working much in the same way. moving clockwise starting from r, going all over the place, leaving you with l. thing is, actually, every song does this to you. sometimes the music wants to you belly dance, sometimes it wants you to act like a stark raving mad bunny bouncing all over the dance floor without mercy. beautiful and definitely a fantastic ep, cannot wait until the next full-length cd. usually when musicians make references to mathematics, physics, or even crowley's number theories, i'm subsequently hesitant because in most cases the mention of pure science postulates dissolves into gimmicks and unrelated misappropriations.╩ the guilty parties habitually include apropos industrial, experimental noize consortiums and/or solitary laptronica wizards effortlessly relying on quasi-algorithms and calculus theorems.╩ ebm and post-industrial electronica seem to have splintered from their grandfathered origins and are at times lost in a sea of genres and overproduced studio efforts.╩ i've regained much of my tolerance again and have restored my auditory faith in noize as a consequent return to the harsh pounding roots of the early '80s experimental industrialization.╩ belgian artist this morn' omina (mika goedrijk) captured the vigilance of both djs and socialites alike with arguably the most rotated noize dance track of the year "one eyed man," a penchant for sampling cold war propaganda with tribalesque ambient undertones.╩ the current project the drake equation transcends earlier releases into its own emblematic conception linking astronomical science equations with compact percussion adaptations. not to be confused with a literal definition, "the drake equation" only exists as an allegory for communication with respect to music as a definitive discourse.╩ he's questioning our co-existence and a possibility of a more cosmic entrenchment. while the album revisits the sounds on le serpent blanc - le serpent rouge, it taps into a neurosymbiotic transmission warped in the kinesis of time and space; a metaphysical transformation using live impulsive drums with an exhaustive plane of tonality. goedrijk, like the majority of eccentric electronic artists, pursues other endeavors including nebula-h, pow[d]er pussy, project arctic, close in proximity, but on a different helix of sound. the subject on this cd-ep titled "the drake equation" from belgian composer this morn omina deals with the question whether we are alone in space or not. according to astronomer frank drake and his equation created back in 1961 the probability of finding extra-terrestrial intelligence somewhere in space is overwhelmingly high (not surprisingly, did this equation have a great impact on the decision of founding the s.e.t.i.-project). each variable in the drake equation have given its name to a track on this latest this morn ormina-album.
