andreas brinkert a.k.a. bipol (synth, sampling, programming & arrangement) has been active since 1992. he has also supported well known bielefeld based artists such as ars moriendi, templegarden's and rasputeen. in 2000, he and andreas glöckner started the rhythm industrial project punch inc. which has released one cd-r and two fulltime cds. in addition, he began to develop his own project bipol in 2005.

ritual is the result of two years of hard work, a mixage of electronic tribal/triphop beats, combined with dark psychotic soundscapes, drony bass lines and odd voice samples. bipol's music could be seen as the continuation of industrial music before power noise took over; that is, pounding beat boxes, irritating electro acoustic sounds and disturbing implementation of effects. the mood is quite the same on this release - brinkert's technical skills and ritual's production prove that this cd is a topical one. moctan's remix of invocation demonstrates that bipol's basics work perfectly in hard four-to-the-floor context. now, if only these two artists would combine their abilities... but that's another story.

bipol's aim is to create a menacing sentiment of insecurity that is a result of medial influences in our industrial civilisation. a kaleidoscope of hope, aspiration and fear, turned into sound. from the beginning you will be trapped in a cage of sheer intensity, unable to escape and unwilling to stop listening. this is the soundtrack of life's dark corners. enjoy...

bipol is the solo project of andreas brinkert, the other half of the duo that together forms the rhythmic industrial project punch inc. bipol is only founded in 2005 so is quite a young project. andreas however does take his experience from working with ars moriendi and rasputeen with him. the title of this work only partly covers the package though. the music is industrial, with repetitive patterns, drones and electronic tribal beats. a ritual atmosphere is created that reminds of times before powernoise and rhythmic industrial music took over in industrial music. at the strongest moments the music gives you an awkward feeling and at times unpleasantly claustrophobic too, which is clearly demonstrated with the tracks 'ritual murder', 'reproduction ii' and 'sweet bombs'. this hypnotic touch that feels like a cold hand around your neck is unfortunately not present in all of the tracks. in many tracks the monotony is dominant. the industrial of bipol has similarities to the music of punch inc. at those moments, be it without the punch, which makes it a bit boring. the impact with which the technoid industial remix of the last track by moctan kicks in, only confirms the shortcomings of this first bipol album. this is industrial simplicity in its purest form. debut album from german artist bipol finds legendary label ant zen recordings back in the great tradition of harsh rhythmic industrial. even though bipol doesn't belong to the harshest spectre of the industrial-scene, there is still plenty of rumbling noises drifting in the sub-levels to keep listeners of abrasive electronics fully entertained. the rhythm textures are the main ingredient on the album, quite often with touches of early ebm-expressions transformed into 21st century industrial attack. hence the title "ritual", bipol focuses on repetitive expressions on the album resulting in an excellent trippy style. with a mixture of distorted beats and dark atmospheric soundscapes, andreas brinkert a.k.a. bipol has created twelve floor-filling no-holds-barred club tracks. despite the album's screaming for some physical performance of the consumer, "ritual" also works well in the state of more passive listening. a very promising debut indeed! ein weiteres projekt aus meiner heimatstadt bielefeld ist bipol. mit andreas brinkert steckt ein künstler dahinter, der schon seit vielen jahren bei den verschiedensten formationen mit dabei war, z.b. ars moriendi oder rasputeen. seit 2001 bringt er zusammen mit andreas glöckner im zweijahresrhythmus unter dem namen punch inc. veröffentlichungen heraus. den zeithorizont hält er weiter ein, diesmal unter dem namen bipol. der silberling aus dem hause ant zen enthält insgesamt 13 tracks, die für den hörer vielfältigste soundkollagen aus den bereichen electronic tribal/trip hop, kombiniert mit dröhnenden basslinien und einer vielzahl von voicesamples bereithält. das ganze hat trotz aller beatlastigkeit einer sehr atmosphärischen, soundtrackhaften charakter. exemplarisch dafür mag der song "ritual murder" stehen, der es schafft, eine beklemmende stimmung zu vermitteln. im weiteren verlauf der cd hört man zwar schnell raus, dass sich alle tracks typischerweise um einzelne, immer wiederkehrende basslinien oder effekte aufbauen, dies tut dem hörgenuss für den industrialfreak aber keinen abbruch. auch wenn dies wie bei "reproduction i" auf dauer manchmal etwas ermüdend wirkt, klingt das ganze leicht modifiziert bei "reproduction II" gleich wieder wesentlich innovativer. seiner eingängigkeit sei dank fällt "destruction" auf "ritual" für mich besonders positiv heraus. auch wenn der großteil der tracks eher "kopfkino" für eine ruhige stunde zu haus ist, schafft der remix des schlußtracks "invocation/ more pain" von moctan noch mal richtig fettes clubfeeling. durchaus zu empfehlen.
