100blumen's roots are in guitar (punk, grindcore and metal). from the
beginning his political stance was anti-fascist and he still
characterizes himself as an anarchist. he discovered industrial music
in 1997 after debuting as a vocalist in a punk band and a few years
later he started experimenting with electronic equipment. in 2005 he
founded the 'le petit machiniste' label and the project that became
100blumen...
although the project's name was taken from the mao zedong quote, (which
sounds harmless at first but culminated in terribly oppressed freedom
of expression) 100blumen's musical aim is not necessarily political. in
his own words, music is an articulation of emotions: "not exactly the
adequate means to express myself, but so far there is no better one
available".
what you are about to hear is a sheer outburst of distorted noise,
chopped sequences and hard driving beats. an edgy fusion of energy and
aggression, rooted in the roughness of punk without any stylish teenage
riot nostalgia. essentially the sound is the power of innocent machines
forced to run amok. this is the continuation of what started with the
no-fi industrial movement way back in the eighties. music that keeps
you awake. music that forces you to think. music to make you move. let
a hundred flowers bloom.

the image of a handgrenate covered with flowers gives the impression we're dealing with explosive stuff here and explosive it surely is. 100blumen is a project which has it's roots in grindcore and punk but it is pure industrial noise on this debut album that get's released via ant-zen. distorted industrial sounds, noise soundscapes and a loud beat are the main elements in the music of 100blumen. the sound has the enchanting and hypnotising effect we know from morgenstern and it has grooves comparable to the music of asche. various tracks are very suitable for industrial dj's, such as 'the flower they come', 'hardy plant', '15druid v.11' and 'techno blume'. the album has enough musical variation with various sorts of percussive elements, fun rhythms, cool sounds and samples, to stay interesting to listen through the complete recording. to make the party even better some excellent remixes have been added from asche vs. morgenstern (hey, what a coincidence!), twinkle and nin kuji. 100blumen is a welcomed good new ant-zen act and in floriculture there is no law! is a an accomplished debut. die vermischung von verschiedenen genres ist mittlerweile kein thema mehr. da wurde schon alles durch den mixer gejagt, was es gibt. das musiker-hopping von einem genre zum nächsten ist zwar auch nicht mehr wirklich erstaunlich, aber meistens teil einer stetigen entwicklung. im fall von 100blumen ist der sprung von grindcore, metal und punk hin zu noise aber doch ein recht grosser. manch einer mag all diese stile als krach zusammenfassen, doch die unterschiede sind extrem. das reicht von der botschaft der songs über die instrumentierung bis hin zu so etwas essentiellem wie dem vorhandensein einer melodie. der initiator des projekts 100blumen, der früher unter anderem für eine punk-band ins mikro grölte, entdeckte vor ca. 10 jahren den industrial für sich und gründete später sogar sein eigenes label le petit machiniste. nun startet 100blumen mit "in floriculture there is no law!" den ersten grossen angriff über ant-zen. dabei geht er besonders schonungslos zu werke. mag man beim projektnamen noch an etwas niedliches denken, wird schon beim cover mit der blumengranate klar, dass hier etwas explosives drin steckt. purer noise schraubt sich durch die gehörgänge und fördert den tinitus. hinzu kommt noch ein deftiger beat und fertig ist die bombe. das ergebnis erinnert manchmal ein wenig an sonar, lässt sich aber dann doch nicht so einfach vergleichen. viele der songs sind sprichwörtliche clubsmahser. da bleibt kein auge trocken. mit "the herb" fängt alles noch oszillierend, dröhnend aber recht harmlos an. doch schon beim zweiten track, "evil seed", besteht dann höchste lärm ansteckungsgefahr. ab hier steigert sich 100blumen in eine art aggressionstaumel. der wird zwar ab und an etwas verlangsamt, hört aber nicht mehr auf. die songs sind stets klar strukturiert, ufern aber unterschiedlich aus. wahrscheinlich je nachdem, wie sich herr 100blumen im griff hatte. reicht noch nicht? richtig! für die endgültige vollendung des werkes fehlen noch remixe. die steuern asche und morgenstern, twinkle sowie nin kuji bei. die kochen wiederum ihr eigenes süppchen, bleiben aber schön auf der aggressionsschiene. so gibt es wenig an "in floriculture there is no law!" auszusetzen, bis auf das spiel mit den zig leeren tracks am ende der cd, damit dann nach endlosem warten ein hidden track zum vorschein kommt. aber ansonsten kann man in vollen zügen geniessen.

wenn sich eine formation 100blumen nennt und das frontcover eine blümige handgranate zeigt, kann man schon ahnen, dass es sich hier nicht um einen musikalischen silbermond oder juli-verschnitt handeln wird. der blick aufs label (ant zen!) räumt letzte zweifel aus, hier kann man beat und "krach" erwarten. während es sich bei dem opener "the herb" genauso wie bei dem später folgenden zwischenstück "kraut bashing" eher um musikalische übergänge handelt, die sich durch eine vielzahl von tönen und stimmungen auszeichnen, geht es mit dem zweiten track "evil seed" gleich in die vollen. die regler voll aufgedreht, sägt sich dieser song förmlich in die gehirnwindungen. die gleiche gangart verfolgen u.a auch "beat that nazi maggot" oder "mr sister", letztgenanntes stück baut zudem ebenso wie "what kind of man are you (alive)" auf den einsatz von samples. nachdem der hörer mit track zwei und drei sozusagen sturmreif geschossen wurde, schält sich mit "the flower they come" die andere seite auf "in floriculture there is no law!" heraus. denn 3 kompositionen, neben dem eben genannten handelt es sich hier um "hardy planet" und "15druid v.11", bauen eher auf prägende basslinien, um die sich die eigentlichen stücke aufbauen. dies sind auch gleich die drei eingängigsten track dieser vö, so scheint es auch kein wunder, dass sie für remixvarianten verwendet wurden. hier sticht vor allem der asche vs. morgenstern remix von "hardy planet" heraus. ein kurzes intermezzo in leicht technoide gefilde stellen "techno blume" (sic!) und "gymnosperms" dar, um dann mit dem titeltrack "in floriculture there is no law" den hörer gleich wieder aufs brutalste in die industrialschiene zurückzuführen. ein album, das jedem genre-fan seine persönlichen highlights bescheren wird! this is a new signing of a new german noise-industrial-duo to the notorious ant-zen label. while the band name is taken out of quote of mao zedong, this act claims, not to be politically inspired - maybe with the nowadays needed aversion against fascism ("beat that nazi maggot"). behind this project stands a quite different musically background, because the unfortunately hiding in anonymity musician has been active in several guitar-driven genres (punk, grindcore or metal), therefore this totally dedication to experimental-minded electronica comes out quite surprising. not a real debut, because this act has previously founded an own label "le petit machiniste" and could release several underground and hard-to-find items. as usual for an ant-zen release, 100blumen offer a lot of disruptive percussion elements and instrumental rhythm torture. not that kind of the redundant ebm-formula out of the pronoize-family, rather more dedicated to noise in itself. the opener "the herb" for instance begins like a manipulated helicopter sound, but the longer this track runs, the more noise and distortion effects are switching in. the track "the flower they come" proves that they can provide also a more calm and rather tribal-inspired work, please note also the fine remix work by the french artist twinkle on this tune. i like "mr. sister" for its fantastic noisy wall of sound, while the retarded voice-samples got definitely a bit too often repeated. "hardy plant" comes at least danceable as well and can be named to the favorites of this album, also for this piece you'll get a remix work by the fine asche vs. morgenstern collaboration project. the track "what kind of a man are you (alive)" finally caused a smile in my face, because of the chosen voice sample, which i remember out of my childhood, as i've discovered a video of the us-hardrock act twisted sister ("i wanna rock"), yes, yes - those where the days, he-he. and note also a special hidden bonus track placed at song position 77 on this cd. this album offers several interesting aspects to discover different kinds of the powernoise genre and - another positive point - it works for several tracks similar well under a pair of headphones instead of storming the dancefloors of the dark clubs. and all listeners who'd expected to get some techno-inspired works as well ("techno blume") i can assure, it's noise. mastered at metarc studios - no comment, because speaks already for itself. there's maybe no law in floriculture - but it offers a quite good powernoise release.
