this collection includes the original version of klangstabil's most
well-known track, which captured the attention of listeners world-wide
right from its first release on a compilation in 2002. besides that you
will find eight interpretations of 'vertraut' demonstrating the
versatility of work that can be extracted out of the catchy, familiar
motif. some of the artists who have remixed the track have based their
interpretation on intelligent dance music: the breakbeat-framed somatic
responses version, a hybrid of breakcore and idm by u.s. project access
to arasaka, keef baker's metric electro background, which turns into
post-rock with dense guitars, and architect's daniel myer gives us
dancefloor-capable pounding beats topped with a plausible new melody
line to complement the original theme. torben wendt (diorama) turns
'vertraut' into beautiful melodic body music, while synapscape keep the
original track structure but replace the instrumentation and beats,
turning the theme into a heavy electronic floorburner. ksdj is maurizio
blanco himself, adding some newly faceted rhythm patterns and melody
lines, making his version a contemporary dj anthem. l'ombre from canada
ends up the remix section with lush ambient electronica at its finest.
the melancholic ambiance of 'zweiter schritt' and 'ein schritt weiter'
not only close this release, but also mark the end of one of the most
important chapters of klangstabil's existence.
in 2002, the album 'kopfmusik' would have been published on ant-zen but
only 6 tracks were produced to completion, one of which was 'vertraut'.
The project was eventually renounced for personal reasons and
'vertraut' was the only track published in its original version. the
artwork was already completed by aiga rasch, an old friend of
klangstabil's, famous for her illustrations for the youth series 'die
drei ???' in which, with her very distinct technique, she has achieved
great success. after 'kopfmusik' klangstabil started straight away with
'taking nothing seriously' (2004) and incorporated some elements of
'kopfmusik' into it. the track 'ein schritt weiter' is an early,
incomplete version of 'away'. other elements of 'kopfmusik' can be
heard in 'lauf, lauf!' and 'beziehungsohr' from the album 'math &
emotion' (2008). this release is not an album, it is the end of the
story for 'kopfmusik' and its history, which accompanied klangstabil
for 10 years. finally, they close that book and put it on the shelf.

klangstabil, das sind boris may und maurizio blanco und sie sind schon seit ihrer gründung 1994 ein geheimtipp in der industrial/electro szene. gleichermaßen spalten sie auch die industrialszene. klangstabil verwenden nicht nur typische krachige und verzehrte industrialelemente, sondern sie arbeiten auch verschiedenste grundelemente aus pop und anderen stilrichtungen mit ein, so dass ein, für den industrial sehr untypisches melodiöses gesamtbild entsteht. erste anklänge dahingehend hört man schon auf ihrer 2004 erschienenen "taking nothing seriously". einen riesen schritt nach vorn machten sie mit ihrem letzten album" math & emotion". mit diesem haben sich die rottenburger ein kleines denkmal gesetzt. nachdem sie ihren duktus gefunden und auch durchgesetzt haben, überraschen sie alle fans und die, die es noch werden wollen, mit einer remix ep zur kulthymne "vertraut". das bisher nur online erhältliche tonkunststück, welches bestandteil der vorletzen onlineveröffentlichung "archiveone" ist, wird auf "vertraut" in neun völlig unterschiedlichen remixen von verschiedensten künstlern reproduziert und geremixt. boris und maurizio konnten keine anderen als torben wendt (diorama), keef barker, daniel myer (haujobb) oder die downtempo-legende access to arasaka für einige der remixe gewinnen. jetzt auf die einzelnen mixe und überarbeitungen einzugehen wäre eine zu komplexe aufgabe und würde ein lexikon an positiven adjektiven füllen. es gibt nur zu sagen, dass jeder song für sich brillant ist. keiner gleicht dem anderen und erinnert meist nur in dem eindeutigen sample einer sehr intimen therapiesitzung oder in der wunderschönen grundmelodie an das original von klangstabil's "vertraut". als weiteren leckerbissen gibt es zwei neue stücke; die da wären "der zweite schritt" und "ein schritt weiter". hier wird die angesprochene therapiesitzung weitergeführt und bringt mehr aufschluss über das vielschichtige wesen der psychischen welt von klangstabil. klangstabil wollen mit ihrer musik berühren. boris und maurizio verpacken gefühle in noten und versetzen den hörer mit jedem ton in ihre klangstabile welt. das haben sie mit "taking nothing seriously" und" math & emotion" gezeigt. genau diese gabe haben sie scheinbar auf die künstler übertragen, die sie bei der neuen silberscheibe unterstützt haben. obwohl "vertraut" diesen titel in 9 versionen enthält, ist "vertraut" ein kleines wunder an vielseitiger elektronischer musik wie es manch anderes album von anderen bands nie sein wird. besonders emotional und hörenswert sind auch die liveauftritte der klangkünstler die ihr euch unbedingt mal ansehen solltet. excerpts from a therapy session, where you're laying your innermost feelings bare, aren't exactly something you're keen to share with the world normally. yet it is what boris may did when embedding them into 'vertraut', which has become a celebrated closer at klangstabil gigs, i never had the honour to witness up to now. this acclaimed track now has been compiled together with an array of renditions and two previously unknown pre-versions of familiar material. the intimacy and heartfelt character of these recorded moments are clear to anyone who's only listened to the first words, sweeping along on spherical fractals, connecting to clusters of density. i think it's taken a whole lot of courage to make those private moments public, but apparently it was necessary. the vulnerability revealed here and the seemingly striking distance make you hold your breath, not to disturb with anything here. somatic responses now are going to shake the song's fabric by tearing part of its build apart harshly, uncovering raw undergrowth. remixes by torben wendt of diorama are rare, but if he chooses to do one you can always be sure you're not getting something half-baked or ill-conceived - as is the case with the 'for a friend' remix he did of 'vertraut'. it's swimming in placid waters until there's a persistent, eclectic beat coming, rippling the clear surface, getting spiced up with masterful, melodic riffs. not being a newbie to access to araska i could tell by simply seeing he's contributing a remix that this was going to steer far away from ordinary structures and formulatic approaches, and i was right! with its complicated rhythm approaches, glitches and melodies it's truly an exception amongst the stuff presented. keef baker rather opts for a more organic sounding variation. if it weren't for those electronic bursts happening, you could call it a divergent view on calm independent rock. also daniel myer offers a reconstruction of 'vertraut'. not being shaped as much abstract as some of the other remixer's works, it's aurally rendering complex human emotions with beautiful melodies, taking the original lines as basis and enhancing them. the 'rejected' remix by l'ombre does have beauty also, but disrupts it with fuzzy basses, noise and glitchy sound gimmicks. you recognize things used in the final version of 'away' and yet 'zweiter schritt' is not the same as that track, built much rougher and having another excerpt from a therapy session taking place long after the one heard on 'vertraut', and things have inarguably changed. 'ein schritt weiter', the pre-version of 'beziehungsohr', hardly could be more differing from the final product. the speech samples are still there but the environment has been drastically changed. 'ein schritt weiter' is purest ambient and ambience while 'beziehungsohr' is forceful with both edgy rhythms and melodies. we could argue whether releasing a cd mostly filled with remixes is necessary and everyone would find points for or against, but fact is, none of the remixes sounds like the one before or afterwards and they have enough unique facets not to be considered filler material to get the disc packed. also both the pre-versions are nothing like their final counterparts. the bottom line: this collection is highly recommended! es gibt songs, die avancieren über eine längere zeit zu einem echten geheimtipp. "vertraut" von klangstabil ist genau solch einer. im original erschien der track bereits 2002 auf dem längst vergriffenen 'maschinenfest' sampler und sollte als vorbote für das geplante aber letztendlich nie veröffentlichte album "kopfmusik" dienen. acht jahre später erlebt "vertraut" nun seine verdiente renaissance. satte neun remixes und zwei bisher unveröffentlichte songs vom nie veröffentlichten album "kopfmusik" formen eine ep, die so intensiv wie experimentell ausfällt. trennungsschmerzen und eine damit verbundene therapie bilden das thematisch grundgerüst auf dem die leicht noisige komposition gebettet ist. gewohnt eingängig und zugleich tiefgründig, hat der song auch acht jahre nach seiner veröffentlichung nichts an seiner anziehungskraft verloren und spielt auch heute noch locker ganz weit vorne in der elektronischen liga mit. künstler wie daniel myer (u.a. covenant, destroid), keef baker oder torben wendt (diorama) haben sich diesem klassiker angenommen und ihn in einen neuen musikalischen kontext gesetzt. mal von gitarren und drums dominiert wie beim "wizballs out! remix" oder dem kernigen "for a friend remix", mal experimentell wie beim "neural chernobyl remix" oder daniel myers "renegade of noise mix" - "vertraut" verliert trotz dieser unterschiedlichen 'sichtweisen' zu keinem zeitpunkt seine eindringlich und intensive grundstimmung. mehr hörspiel als song sind hingegen die beiden titel "zweiter schritt" und "ein schritt weiter", bei denen der fokus deutlich auf der psychologischen aufarbeitung der trennung und den damit verbundenen gesprächen als auf der eigentlichen musik liegt. diese erinnert durch ihre cineastisch attitüde stark an den soundtrack zu "blade runner", der seinerzeit von vangelis komponiert wurde. klangstabil liefern mit "vertraut" einen exquisiten song ab, der trotz seines betagten alters durch und durch überzeugen kann und nach wie vor das potential zu einem szene-klassiker hat.

schon 1994 haben maurizio blanco und boris may klangstabil gegründet. es dauerte aber bis 2002, dass mit "vertraut" ein erstes richtiges ausrufungszeichen auf einer compilation veröffentlich wurde. seither gab es zahlreiche veröffentlichungen, zuletzt das großartige album "math & emotion". und man findet gar nicht ausreichend superlative um diese band zu würdigen. denn selten gelingt es heute noch bands etwas eigenes zu schaffen. auch wenn ich mich an dieser stelle wiederhole - dafür kämpft sich der musikfreund doch durch die unzähligen veröffentlichungen. aus meiner sicht ist die neuauflage von "vertraut" ein schöner grund zu feiern. und weil klangstabil eben anders sind, ist diese veröffentlichung trotz der typischen zutaten (remixe und unveröffentlichtes material) einmal mehr eine kleine perle. das treibende original mit seinen sprachsamples ist immer wieder ein genuss und kein freund elektronischer musik darf diesen song ignorieren. und die meisten der namhaften bearbeiter geben dem song eine eigene note. torsten wendt (diorama) lässt den hörer träumen, synapscape regt schon fast zum tanzen an und daniel myer verbindet beides. insgesamt sorgen die großen namen dafür, dass man meint, einer hochwertigen idm-zusammenstellung zu lauschen. trotz der immer wieder eingesetzten samples und dem immer aufgegriffenen themas des originals. zum abschluss gibt es zwei songs, die für das nie veröffentlichte album "kopfmusik" eingespielt wurden. zwar handelt es sich "nur" um atmosphärische songs, die das thema durch weitere sprachsamples vertiefen. die musik unterstreicht aber sehr gelungen, die intensität, die solchen dialogen innewohnen kann. und der titel dieses unveröffentlichten albums trifft den nagel auf den kopf. es ist faszinierend. und da ich gerade im wm-fieber bin, versuche ich mich an einer sport-metapher (hört, hört). warum sieht bei einem thomas müller alles ein wenig eigenartig aus. schlacksige figur, dünne beine und die schienbeinschoner drohen bei jeder ballberührung abzufallen. aber er schießt die tore. modellathlet mario gomez hingegen will bei allem einsatz nichts gelingen. so ist es hier auch. klangstabil und ihre musik sind nicht hart oder besonders auffallend. eigentlich machen sie sogar popmusik. aber sie sind etwas besonderes und darum treffen die cds eben den nerv bei vielen zuhörern. nahezu weltmeisterlich.

on this release of klangstabil you find no less than 8 versions of the track that attracted much attention in 2002 and would become klangstabil's most well known track. with such a strong original it is hard to deliver a series of interesting remixes yet ant-zen has managed to attract good electronic projects to remix this song with its recognizable rhythm pattern and beautiful melodies. the best remix is the one by ksdj who actually is maurizio blanco himself, who turned the track into a modern dance floor smasher. also nice are the breakbeat remix by somatic responses, the melodic remix by diorama's torben wendt, the atmospheric remix by daniel myer and the electro meets postrock remix by keef baker. furthermore you'll find on this ep the tracks 'zweiter schritt' and 'ein schritt weiter', which are early versions of what would become the tracks 'away' and 'beziehungsohr' that can be found on the later releases taking nothing seriously and math & emotion. these tracks were originally together with 'vertraut' meant for a release titled kopfmusik, but this never was realized. nice to see these tracks return in different versions after all.
