the idea of producing a concept album about chess arose in the summer of 2005 when boris may started cultivating an interest in the game to find a way to overcome his growing mental laziness. maurizio blanco also liked the idea of turning chess into a musical concept. chessboards and relevant literature were aquired so as to get into to the spirit of the game. originally, the title of this album was planned to be "mindchess". later on, it was transformed into 'math & emotion' because this title reflects the way klangstabil learned how to play the game. "the concept 'math & emotion' became wider and overstepped the limits of a mere game of chess. it was projected on interhuman behavioral patterns in the everyday game of life." (boris may); at the end of 2005, boris may was captivated by the idea to make a cover for 'math & emotion' in the dime novel/ghost story style of the german "gespenster geschichten" comics. these ghost novels were pulp fiction that was published in the 1970s and that impressed him deeply in his childhood. after some research he was able to contact the artist who did the cover paintings, ugurcan yüce (can). boris may: "since he is not only a painter but also a musician, we got on to the same wavelength very quickly when the concept of 'math & emotion' was explained. i explained how the chess theme should run through the whole album." this contradiction is visually realised by two archetypal spirits emanating from boris may's and maurizio blanco's bodies to fight the deadly match to the end. the music on this album seems easily accessible, resuming the path klangstabil has been on for years. the first impression to the expectant listener might be undiluted dark electro-based pop, but this isn't an inaccurate evaluation, as they call it 'klangpop'. massive synth surfaces, pulsing sequencer patterns and intense vocals intertwined with precise computerized drum beats add up to memorable tunes. on closer examination oblique details become visible: elaborated rhythmical work, hidden sound fragments and the specific tension klangstabil are well-known for - all aided by significant lyrics in german, english and italian. the more you engage in 'math & emotion' the more the deepness of this release will develop - just like the seemingly simple game of chess and the game of life.

at a very young age, the norwegian one man project hpc started creating electronic music that ranged from danceable electronica and psytrance to hard-/speed-/breakcore, ambient and noise. after some experimentation and development he felt the time for a first release was right and now 'halfbreed' has been realized. in his own words, hpc's aim is to build an aural exposure of his personal view of life by creating music beyond predictable schedules and clichés in electronic music. with this debut he has perfectly accomplished what he had in mind. hpc presents a fusion of heavy syncopated beats and pulsing low end bass, balanced by synth textures and soundtrackish samples - inducing atmospheres that dwell between unbridled ecstasy and subliminal hypnosis. tracks like 'machine' and 'run' are a fine example of the terrifying and liberating climax of rhythmic power's crescendo. feel free to file 'halfbreed' between illbient, dubstep and darkest ambient that has accumulated hardtech aggressiveness. with this album hpc hit the target - and this is only the beginning...

audio vandalism is the first release by the young artist jb zeller who is based in southern france. this release includes eleven tracks which were recorded between 2005 and 2008. zeller is effected by 'all kinds of subversive music' (ranging from breakcore and industrial music to dubstep) in such a way that he is able to assimilates these different musical facets into his own style. needless to say the results are unique and subversive in their own right. audio vandalism is an aggregation of complex beat layers, deep dark bass, distorted synth textures, ominous samples and algid ambiences that are interwoven with atrabilious melody lines. straight forward electro-industrial meet the complexness of breakbeats merged with whirls of noise, captured media coverage and a hint of melancholy. this album can be seen as a missing link between heavy, metric electronica, straight-line jungle-core and saturnine movie soundtracks. join the audio vandalism!

the german label raubbau have decided that the time is ripe to end the nearly two decades of severe under-exposure for deaf machine, the megaptera offshoot conceived by mikael svensson. previously in 2008 the 'found noises' cd was put out, a release that was met with great enthusiasm. a majority of listeners to industrial music were up until this year not even aware of the name deaf machine. only a minuscule fraction had ever heard the music. merely ten people can claim to actually own the original tape release. but certainly the extremely limited nature of an album does not automatically imply that its content merits another issue. in the case of 'transistor' any such fear of groundless hyperbole can be scrapped. while operating within the confines of death industrial, the sound of deaf machine clearly lacks antecedence in its more oppressive, minimal approach; a rhythm-less universe inhabited by the creaking noises of analogue devices and metallic artefacts, and fleeting voices leaking through from media broadcasts. svensson may have been a minor player in the scene, but his precious few moments of brilliance are now finally captured for posterity. what more semi-forgotten corpses from the heyday of swedish death industrial are waiting to be unburied?

rotor siffredi and joke stryker first met in 1989 as young recruits in the vatican city's swiss guard. after many years of serving and protecting the holy father they got a bit bored and discovered their mutual fascination for loud music and heavy leather. cbihl was born! enigmatically, cbihl professed to have cruised the realms of central europe 'to convert all the lost souls down the valley deep and up the mountain high'. within a few years they had gathered many enthusiastic disciples from their public appearances. at one of these occasions cbihl met a mysterious person who was semi-nude, had their face enshrouded by a paper bag and who was preaching about liverwurst sandwiches, bureaucracy, insect people, and calling himself rasputin. immediately they knew that this was a memorable coincidence - after all, wasn't the russian rasputeen often called the 'mad monk'? so they kept contact, and in a few years the metamorphosis from rasputin to rasputeen took place. eventually they decided to enter a studio to amalgamate their spiritual powers and release: rasputeen in heavy leather! what you are about to receive is a perfect symbiosis between cbihl's noise- and e-punk influences and rasputeen's minimal-breakbeat-electropop madness. distorted beats covered with a purgatory of pounding sequenced structures, multilayered samples and aggressive, claiming vocals. raw, wild and dirty - music for (the) masses - hallelujah!

translation of 'le pêcheur de noyés' is almost impossible, but 'the fisher of drowned ones' covers it quite good. nautilus, the water based sub-division of spectre records, presents its tenth release and all honours go to vromb. the canadian sculptor of electronic sounds pictures life below water-level and sadly for us humans, the oxygen-level isn't high enough to survive ... 'le pêcheur de noyés' is the story about roger girard who - as a scubadiver - searched for and found several corpses of drowned people. not the most cheerful of stories to tell, but a fact of life. his stories have been well documented over the years and this cd add a new dimension to the archives. the atmosphere and underwater sounds are amazingly well caught by roger girard's son hugo, who happens to be vromb. deep rumbling sounds, oxygen masks producing waterbubbles and a cry for help which wasn't heard in time. the characteristic rhythm based soundsculptures of vromb are on this album accompanied by more ambient works; a bit compareable with the ones we have gotten to know on 'jeux de terre'. the result is an honest, sincere and very personal release which only one man could write. this release comes in a deluxe-box with many additional items like postcards, stickers and a metal pin, but also copies of the actual newspaper clippings from the recoveries by roger girard. the result is most impressive in more ways then one ... limited edition 369 copies.

after two aquatic adventures on the spectre sub-label nautilus and the emotional trilogy 'amore', 'chagrin' and 'drift' on spectre records itself, you might have wondered if the guys from kraken would be able to rise above the level of excellence they had already reached. in all honesty and modesty, because we are the ones releasing it: yes, they are. on 'nachtschade' the krakens take their creational possibilities a step further on a combined cd & dvd release. the cd part gives you over an hour worth of new music as dictated by the little voices in the twisted minds of joris and ricardo. there are thirteen untitled tracks in which you are guided around the world with influences ranging from belgium to india, spoken word in dutch and iranian and finally auditory visualisation from above and under sealevel. on the dvd it looks like the men behind those little voices took over the camera, lightning and sound department of a professional filmset. the result is some truely astonishing video material with which kraken annihilates every predefined thought in your head. sixty-five minutes of either new material - not even on the 'nachtschade' cd - or reworked older tracks and visuals ranging from high quality art movies to lynch-like mindscapes. and no, we are not joking about this ...'nachtschade' by kraken is not just another spectre release, it's a whole new dimension.

it has been two years since hysteresis surprised friend and foe with their debut release 'measures chaos', which was also presented by spectre records. and the dynamic duo hasn't been doing nothing between then and now ... 'will + representation' is even more eclectic and chaotic as the first album, resulting in a mixture ranging from breakbeats and ragga to metal and industrial. tracks where neither the prodigy, nor - at moments - fear factory would feel any shame for having written it. and all that on one album, without ever loosing that specific touch of hysteresis. so what is that specific 'touch of hysteresis'? well, even though there are kazillion books written on the scientific meaning, it suffices to summorize them as 'a system that may be in any number of states, independent of the inputs to the system'. and yes, that is exactly what hysteresis is all about. you can expect anything musically possible, but the guys behind it don't give a f*ck because they are who they are and they do what they do best. it must be said that hysteresis is one of the best hidden secrets in belgium, but 'will + representation' might very well change that.

inferno ... amongst its meanings are 'an intense fire' as well as 'hell'. but it is also the first chapter in dante's 'divine comedy' and a film by dario argento. in other words: inferno is a place of imagination. and spectre is proud to release the vision and imagination of this morn' omina on this subject. in three long tracks with a total playing time of over 50 minutes you are being told a story of the darkest of dark thoughts. opressive atmospheres are scarcely being joined by rhythmic structures and vocals. though the vocals don't give you the whole story. you are meant to form your own opinion on this subject. this morn' omina merely gives you what you need to create that opinion. and during the creation of your personal hell you ask yourself why it always has to be so dark, for it is a place where sinners are. you remember life as it was ... 'weren't there also sins that actually were quite enjoyable?' 'what if that guy ...' doors cleverly concealed...unexplored abandoned industrial sites....the anglerec and mondes elliptiques labels had the opportunity to work with many sound artists whose explorations are accompanied by a will to uncover on the field, in the abstract as well as in the concrete, different mysteries or secrets, or at least, to probe the enclave, the place they haunt. the skinwell project is no exception; its two protagonists, christian corvellec and martin dumais, concoct music for tunnels, those places, where, at the end, one is beginnning to see the light, as the old proverb says, but in the present case, we do not really care; we can see the light in the distance, it also penetrates different interstices or fissures along the walls of the tunnels where we progress, but we prefer taking the time to pace the premises, to permeate ourselves with the sound echoes with which they fill our ears and head, and it should be mentioned that the ambient-drone styling embraced by skinwell contains, like the music of some well-known artists of the genre (here we shall name cranioclast, troum or zoviet france with the unique goal of giving people a better idea as to where they are on the map of sonorities), a whole assortment of subtle electronic pulsations, concocted here by christian corvellec, which always adequately support the sound fabrics woven by martin dumais, and which also are their starting point. one only has to imagine a minimal tech project gone the drone-ocean way ...pulsations are there, always, but tinged with a sonic fog that is heavy, damp and fluid at the same time and which always suggests, in the end, uncertain twist and turns in this crossing of tunnels. but who would complain? skinwell represents the first musical project on disc involving christian corvellec. on tunnels, with martin dumais he seals an alliance of the most fruitful nature, whose initial results gained, right at the beginning, general consensus among fans of ambient-noise and drone looking for new sensations. for his part, martin dumais has been part of montreal's electronic and exploratory music scenes for the last 20 years. he mainly gained attention with his odds industrial project towards the end of the 80s, his techno ventures juicebox (with marc leclair aka akufen) and les jardiniers, and finally his current psych-drone project, aun (with three cds on oral in montreal and one on crucial blast in the united states). packaging: special cardboard deluxe sleeve. limited to 333 numbered copies.

there's no guide or manual for what mystery palace does, no easy clockwork formula hidden in the minneapolis-based trio's agenda. sequenced electronics-plus-live instruments offer a tough enough row to hoe on their own; when the former come from a pair of heavily circuit-bent yamaha mid-pro keyboards, opportunities for disaster multiply exponentially. luckily, so do opportunities for the sorts of disastrous successes the band enjoys regularly, largely thanks to founder food team's aptitude for riding his profusely toggle-switxhed brainchildren's outputs like a porn star. granted, the artist sometimes still known as ryan olcott has had practice galore, having built and mastered the instruments with the sort of diligence usually enountered only in fantasy novels and large-scale government operations. only after countless hours of woodshedding and a healthy slew of live dates did he enlist ex-poor line condition bassist james buckley and veteran vertiform drummer joey van phillips in what must have seemed like a very quixotic endeavor at the time. olcott got lucky. not only does his rhythm section provide the perfect complement to the remarkably varied profusion of colors and textures he wrenches from his frankeninstruments (imagine an exceedingly fluid warp + mego fusion); like olcott, buckley and phillips are actually capable of responding to the digital critters' powerful surprise-generating capacity so gracefully, you'd never guess the extent of their vigilance. or maybe that part is all a shuck of sorts. lately, the whole operation has proceeded so smoothly onstage and in the studio (where the band has proceeded well beyond improvisation, recording elegantly structured songs, complete with vocals) that you can't help but wonder if the keyboards, having grown minds of their own, are merely doing their best to keep the fellas alert. god knows, they are.

'spectrum' covers all parts of mata - diversification and variation with satisfaction guaranteed. you won't find a single 'sable' track in this package! the direction of cd1 is focussed on heavily distorted rhythms that are monotonous, minimal, and repetitive. however, you can always hear mata's experience in the building up of an electrified analog beat in concert with the unique elements of a track or of a song. listen to 'the council' featuring sheila mata's voice and you will understand mata's craftiness. this cd ends with an unreleased remix by two ant-zen artists which lead the listener to the non-rhythmic soundscapes of cd2. these soundscapes illustrate mata's melodic direction with the use of disturbing mostly non-distorted rhythm-loops that are overlayed with harmonious passages. once again, you can hear klangstabil's uniqueness on this long awaited release. the musical variety of this record ranges from pop-oriented synth-tunes ('gloomy day' - a different version appeared on the 'daruma' compilation) done over distorted electro-beats to soundtrackish infernos. in addition, the album also explores grindcore (if you are familiar with the klangstabil/schmerzverstärker split-7" you won't be surprised about that). however, mentioning musical genres leads the open-minded listener down the wrong path. a brief description of the music's intensity is hard to give. reading the lyrics and listening to the haunting vocals is as uncomparable - as is labelling 'gloomy day' 'synthpop'. on this album, the message counts, which is the total of music, vocals, production and lyrics. this is an album which forces you to listen intensely, and it is one of the most personal and emotional records ant-zen has ever released.

it's hard to believe that revolutionary hardcore drum'n'bass producer mathis mootz, more commonly known as panacea, is releasing his sixth full-length album as m2 - pronounced "squaremeter" but it's true, and in keeping with an unrelenting drive to push himself, mootz delivers a complete and total evolution in m2's ethos with war of sound. "an artist should always progress with his sound, the actual style of m2 i've been working on is more 'danceable,' better for live-shows than the complete ambient-like productions i've done in the past," says mootz. "well, certainly there have been loads of glitch-ambient releases in the past but my live shows with m2 really showed me the necessity of beats. i thought it would be easy to work with rhythm in m2 songs - they are all from 60 to 90 bpm... slow so you can easily bang your head!" getting to the head banging takes a little while, as war of sound builds in slow, deliberate movements, carefully establishing a dark chord progression in the introductory "the cry of morgoth" that flows throughout the album. this ominous leitmotif is enriched by mootz' liberal use of vocal elements - both as a focal point via heart-wrenching voice solos and the evil-toned narration from the silmarillion, and as somber texture in the distant sounds of a purgatorial choir. on the second track, "turbulent sound," more characteristically clickish m2 sounds penetrate war of sound's macabre fabric, where laptop glitch elements akin to sinecore's microsound aesthetic pepper the music before cracking into a blistering break that foreshadows the tempestuous driving synth pulse of "discord (war of sound)." "the music seized" offers a melodic respite with gentle ambient tones that makes the metal-tinged pounding of "the scourges of fire" the malevolent zenith of war of sound, with its thunderous echo and martial tempo. the rancor continues into the denouement, "thus began also...," another glitch-filled affair married to overtones of synth oblivion. war of sound ends on the prophetic minor chords of "in ages forgotten:" and the melodies which had been heard before foundered in a sea of turbulent sound. special cardboard packaging w/ metallic paper.

an artist has 10 to 20 years to make his first album and one year for the second one. if a debut is accepted by listeners and reviewers then it has an effect on the artist's future work. expectations aren't easy to ignore and there are only a few musicians who won't be influenced by these reactions. there are three directions an artist can pursue with a follow-up: walk the same path as they did on the first record, change the style radically or use the fundamentals of the debut as a basis for exploration into new spheres. stephen sawyer a.k.a. l'ombre has chosen the third direction. the mixture of electronic and acoustic sources that lead into mellow, floating soundscapes is sawyer's trademark. that trademark is present on this new record, but it is not a re-hash of older ideas. the first surprising change on "simulations 1.0" is the mood of the ten tracks; the temperature seems to have risen a bit - especially when the release is compared to the icy and colder atmosphere of 'medicine...'. just listen to the piano on 'nowhere' and then to the floating vibraphone on 'interlocution' to feel the difference. in addition l'ombre has also strengthened his rhythms. the pulsating patterns/slight breakbeats intensify the soundscapes and melodies - in short, they complete them. 'facsimile' and 'these whispers' are examples of this unique blend - if you removed the rhythm then the fragile tissue would fall apart. perhaps, this music is no longer suitable for watching the northern lights but if you listen to this record late at night, you might see previously unseen stars in the clear black sky. once again, the description of "an imagined soundtrack" fits perfectly. this cd comes in special paper packaging with embossing.

vromb's intention on 'rayons' is to translate several kinds of rays into music - ranging from sunbeams to optical rays. so, 'rayons' can also be seen as an aural sight-seeing tour. the 'speed' factor is that of a person moving (whether by foot or in different vehicles). this movement was transformed into rhythmic patterns. imagine the aural equivalent of taking a walk during a thunderstorm ('éclairs') or feeling the sun peaking through a clouded sky while window shopping ('boulevard'). all sounds were generated with analog and digital synthesizers. the listener might believe that they are hearing modulated samples but this is not true. it is once again, an example of girard's virtuosity in creating 'naturalistic' soundscapes with pure electronic equipment. for the images on the album cover, girard gave the photographer alain gauvin the basic audio tracks for inspiration. the final musical structure on 'rayons' is based on inspirations from gauvin's pictures which were taken in the montreal area. so close your eyes, let yourself go and feel the rays coming out of your speakers.

after the re-release of '7 years of famine' ant-zen presents the first part of this morn' omina's 'nyan' trilogy. so - what can the listener expect? 'le serpent blanc' concentrates t.m.o.'s combination of hard techno, 4-to-the-floor rhythms, tribal percussion and breaks overwhelmed by voice samples. this music is powerful and aggressive, but not as nihilistic as many industrial soundwars. if you can't dance to it, you must be at least deaf, maybe blind, or at least a one-eyed man... cd2, 'le serpent rouge' focusses the ritual-influenced side of mika's musical personality. this music is more quiet than 'le serpent blanc' but never calm or soft - open up your mind and let it flow... and then finally take a few minutes at your pc (or mac) and enjoy the brilliantly done live video of 'shiftwind' - and be sure that this trilogy will be continued!

the open minded listener knows marc medea as one half of the belgian duo, silk saw and now the listener will also know marc medea as the man behind individual. individual, medeas solo project, debuted on ant-zen with his appearance on the 'daruma' compilation'. the compilation featured the short version of '180 bullets per man' - the title track of individual's first album, also presented by the antz. medea's definition of this album: 'an abstract battlefield combining subbasses & furious rhthms, low wavelengths & sharp metals, dry kicks & pricks. declined in multiple layers of sonic masses, from the slowest organic mood to the fastest cold grinding, these resonating terrorbeats have to be understood as a refusal of all compromises and the expression of a methodic anger.' individual's focus is that of using rhythmic patterns to create a psychic (or even maybe a psychotic) mood - if you are willing and able to discover this listening experience then you will find yourself trapped in a complex building of rhythms and drones. '180 bullets per man' is a subliminal war against your aural senses.

roger rotor has worked as an electronic musician since 1993. his first solo record was released in 1999 and prior to that, he performed in several bands with varying musical styles. some of these projects date back to 1983. rotor's earlier releases are more noise oriented and as such it was quite a surprise when he confronted the unprepared audience of maschinenfest 02 with a straightforward rhythmic 4/4 beat attack. people asked for records and exactly one year later he has delivered his debut ant-zen full length. the malleus maleficarum (the witch hammer, geman: der hexenhammer), first published in 1486, served as a guidebook for inquisitors during the inquisition and was designed to aid them in the identification, prosecution, and dispatching of witches. 'i always wanted to use 'malleus maleficarum' as an album title', says rotor, 'and i think this title fits perfectly for this record. it shall be an 'inqusitional guide' to identify, prosecute and dispatch awfully bad electronic music - so-called 'living-room techno' - but of course, as with lots of my works, you should see it a bit humourous. but of course my aim is also that people should take a look at the original book, highly recommended... and as an old heavy metal addict i surely like things like that, haha!' do you recall 'drown delay' on the daruma compilation? did you like it? then this is your cd! comparisons? well, maybe to styles, not to artists. the rhythmic textures seem to have their roots in the tech movement that was present at the end of the eighties. rotor adds rhythmic synth fills and hence turns the tekk basic into 'electro-punk'. the end result is a hypnotic, hard and danceable record. ok, maybe one comparison to a band is allowed - imagine pan sonic with heavier beats (listen to 'wolfish' or the title track). these hard, bassy minimal techno tracks will scourge your sinful flesh - we know that you hide those kate ryan cds behind your bedroom wall. confess ! repent ! revoke ! the cd comes in special cardboard packaging.

after six years and several releases on different labels, matthieu maire decided to cancel all activities that were executed under the celluloid mata moniker. but it wasn't his intention to end his musical activities - something just had to change. as a member of the ant family he was in contact with philipp münch (synapscape, ars moriendi and a solo artist (rorschach garden)). mata decided to exchange musical ideas with philipp and a new project was formed. a project that would include the creative output of both musicians. hence, cell auto mata was created. maybe you heard the first result on ant zen's 'daruma' compilation and maybe you wanted to get some more - well, here it is. we proudly present cell auto matas first full length release. the first impression you might have while listening to this cd is that these are songs - not just 'tracks'. for instance, 'huevos de oro' or 'ish galil' are based on a 4/4 beat, melodies and even vocals - in other words they are structured like a song. but this isn't pop; the industrial and technoid influences of both members melt together and deliver music that is beyond a listener's expectations and previous listening experiences. the cd's mood seems to be quite dark and serious at first, but as the title implies: the devil is in the detail (and behind the surface). you need more time for this record than you might initially think (also you need time to check out all the nice little photos on the cover). those who are familiar with both of the artist's previous releases might be able to identify the musical roots of this cd. such as the 'synapscape-ish' sequencer treatments in 'gws hearse' or the 'surf-organ' on 'hipsters'. nevertheless, this cd is an original and should not be seen as 'just another collaboration'. it should be heard as the debut album that it actually is.

in 1991, jérôme chassagnard and régis baillet started their sound explorations as a unit named ab ovo (latin "from the egg"; in literature, the practice of beginning a poetic narrative at the earliest possible chronological point). four years have passed since their last cd 'triode', and now the current state of the project's evolution can be heard on ant-zen's first ab ovo release: 'le temps suspendu...'. it is presented as a double cd - cd 1 includes the album itself, cd 2 contains remixes of past and present ab ovo tunes. remixes that were done by von magnet, mimetic, haiku, emphasis and others. 'le temps suspendu...' can be described as mostly quiet, but never soothing. melodic soundscapes, distant, oftenly semi-comprehensible voices and rhythms fade in and out. the listener is lead into a nightmarish view of the mind's eye. there is always an irritating detail. for instance, the looped laughter sample on 'horizon vertical' which disturbs the soft ambience and turns beautiful tracks into imaginary david lynch or stanley kubrick soundtracks. imagine transplanting the icy world of geir jenssen's early works into warmer regions, then you might have a description of 'le temps suspendu...'s mood. six artists remixed 10 ab ovo tracks on cd 2 - this cd can be seen as an album in its own right; ab ovo's basics turn into collage-oriented work (spuma, un jardin si secret...), a melodic and slightly drum-and-bass oriented piece (the sky horses) or a danceable trance-techno track (soundgate). the 'horizon vertical' remix focusses on the melody and this shows a different aspect of ab ovo's material (since the voice sample is not present). a highly recommended release which is best enjoyed at night - at the borderline between sleep and awake.

upon the circulation of his first short story collection, altmann's tongue (knopf, 1994), author and professor brian evenson found himself out of favor with his spiritual home ground, the church of jesus christ of latter day saints - the mormon church. since that time, evenson's incisive, acerbic writing about the medieval brutality of contemporary humanity has gone on to garner significant praise, and not a few distinctions. the creation of altmann's tongue - which features brian evenson reading selections from several books through a sonic fabric created by xingu hill and tamarin - proved to be similarly cataclysmic, although of markedly different scale. on the surface, altmann's tongue appears to be a simple spoken word project backed by experimental sound design and post-industrial ambience of a distinctly harrowing nature. however, brian evenson's readings, recorded in an impromptu fashion in a sparse white apartment, begat an intensity of emotion that compelled xingu hill and tamarin to work for over three years on musical reactions that could equal the sentiment of evenson's recordings. musical reactions, ranging from morose synth rhythms to enigmatic drones. evenson's verbal recordings and the music feed upon themselves like the ouroboros, like the snake which grows by eating itself. ant-zen is proud to present altmann's tongue as a unique, compelling collaboration between a thought-provoking author and two exceptional sound experimentalists. packaging: jewelcase w/ 16p booklet (special paper).

ultra milkmaids started in 1993 as a trio. the third member, oliver, left the group in 1997 and the remaining brothers jan and rodolphe turned the former punk/noise/ambient/rock formation into the soundscape-oriented project we know today - take the 'peps' cd on duebel or the 'disco_2k ep' vinyl on ant-zen for example. u.m. had already announced 'pop pressing' in interviews: "maybe our music became more 'listenable'" -- they said. to answer the question "what do you mean, listenable?" there was... "pop! rock! dance music! choose your own!" maybe you think that u.m. is 'closing the circle' by returning to their guitar-oriented roots but what we have here is not quite a circle - maybe it is an ellipsis? an egg? or something entirely non-geometric ! but let's be brief now: undeniably, 'pop pressing' is still the milkies at their best. the first tracks contain the atmospheric soundscapes that listeners of 'peps' are familiar with. pure electronica as it seems - until 'go go...' where u.m. shows their virtuosity in creating these soundscapes with flageoletted guitars, a short saxophone intercourse and the usage of the good old analog delay every 80s-guitarist knows so well... you are still reading and you are hopefully still listening - but wait what is this? it is track 10. if you already have the ant-zen compilation 'daruma', 'my personal tv system won't be that surprising, but if you don't - yes, this is still the u.m. psychedelia, but no, this is not stereolab playing drums, electric bass and rhythm guitar - here you will find the postrock-basics with the electronica add-ons, perfectly combined. and if you liked the milkies' personal tv system, you will love the final track of this album - an aural greeting from the egg's top to sonic youth...

'orbital ground attack' is the proof that it isn't always necessary to re-invent the wheel. the album's experience is made up of 10 merciless, powerful four-to-the-floor tracks with dominating rhythms, melodic synth layers and economically placed samples - nothing more, nothing less. if you're looking for references: tracks like 'sacrifice' and 'nemesis' seem to hint that g.s. admires a distorted dj's recent work; on 'the day after' and 'prepare for contact' there are slight similarities to ... so what ? the difference between g.s.'s music and these (possible) reference points is the harshness of the rhythm itself (without the over usage of distortion). another g.s. trademark is the mounting tension within a track - all done by utilizing rhythmical variations. 'orbital ground attack' can be described as 'contemporary rhythmic industrial'. in addition, this young artist isn't afraid of contemplating and processing the influences of other musical genres. so prepare for battle, and don't forget: the only good bug is a dead bug !

all the tracks on this album are based on material composed especially for a french play called 'les chambres d'œdipe', an adaptation of hölderlin's translation of 'œdipus tyrant', by sophocles. 'les chambres d'œdipe' was performed in november 2003 and february 2004 at the théâtre méga-pobec in evreux, france. the first performance took place at the fear drop festival (les nuits de l'observatoire) and silk saw played live for every performance. in order to achieve a proper life independently of 'les chambres d'œdipe', most of the tracks were strongly reworked at laboratoire central (some months after the performances). if you never have the opportunity to watch the play don't worry - this soundtrack featured on this album speaks for itself. once again, gabriel severin and marc medea lead the listener into a strange, dark, and threatening parallel sound universe. if you are familiar with silk saw's former works you might be surprised by the unusual straight ahead beats on track 1, but soon the typical silk saw-ish rhythmic patterns take over. usually silk saw avoids the usage of voices but in this production the sometimes manipulated embedded vocals compliment and add to the soundscapes. also noticeable are the very strong sub-basses and unusual (for silk saw) distorted noises which transform the frightening and sometimes aggressive atmosphere into a climax. friedrich hölderlin died after 35 years of psychic paralysis, do not forget this while listening. packaging: jewelcase cd.

t.kniep and p.münch have finally finished their first full length album since 2001 and compared to other ant-zen releases this is not simply an 'act' - it is an act! on this cd, synapscape's astonishing rhythm skills are perfectly displayed. keeping the beat straight but always changing the patterns throughout a track. when a track starts you might think you know how it will proceed, but while listening you will end up being surprised. there is a permanent change - without any real interference. the album could also be described as an 'attack on expectations' - sequencers and electronic percussion replace the expected bass drum; in a heavily distorted 4/4 track a techno-like 5th-chord is embedded; crystal clear drum strokes replace distorted beats; - those 'attacks' are the sparks of the burning flow. the variety of sound is evident in the ambient tracks like 'kollberg' and 'sellout', the hard 4/4-beat-ers like 'the hoe' and 'katunga' (which lean heavily toward the distorted dance floor) and the live-killer-tracks ('wings' and 'alice') which may be well-known to synapscape addicts. but act!'s general mood is what makes this cd a real album and not just a compilation of new tracks. this album is nothing less than an improvement and a logical progression of synapscape's conceptual work. the act! is done.

ant-zen presents stephen sawyer's follow-up to last years 'simulations 1.0'. once again, the listener dives into a strange parallel universe that is populated by dark ambiences, paralyzing sub-basses and cold-sounding rhythms. the rhythmic part of l'ombres' work has also increased and on 'simulations 2.0' you can find unusual references - such as slow dark hop oriented beats and loops that are overlaid with smooth synth soundscapes, soundtrackish samples and filter manipulations. a perusal of the 7 remixes done by ab ovo, enduser, hecq, mimetic, displacer and s:cage reveals reverberated distorted beats, drum'n'bass / breakbeats or straight ambient polyrhythmic percussion/synth lines - adding a stylistic diversity to l'ombres 'simulations 1.0 and 2.0. packaging: gatefold sleeve w/ metallic paper.

it took this morn' omina three years to reach the next part of the 'nyan' trilogy, and it was worth the wait. lots of change and experiences happened during this period - the most important change might be that of sal-ocin, the new band member, his skills as a percussionist have been added to mika's ultra-precise machinery usage - on stage and in the studio. 'les passages jumeaux' is presented as a 2-cd-set: 25 (cd1): you will be blown away by the sheer power and intensity of the first two tracks but then you will be lead into a state of hypnosis, trance and ecstasy - and before you know it you will get trapped in the tribal beats and moody sequencer lines. lines that lead to the world tree and 33 . 33 (cd2): your senses will be overwhelmed by thronging rhythmic variations, atmospheric synth lines and voice samples. t.m.o.'s ability to create a continuous musical flow while welding a conglomeration of single tracks to one logical aural concept is always astonishing and is proven here once again. this release is an excellent continuation of this morn' ominas work - and 'nyan' will be continued...

szkieve is dimitri della faille who founded the project in 1998. besides several szkieve releases, dimitri has also collaborated with martiens go home and vromb, and made a split-vinyl with ammo. szkieve's music is made of intense and complex compositions that assemble rich textures and expansive sounds. this is then combined with chords, string melodies and high-pitched synthetic
